Dear friends,
On February 3ʳᵈ and 4ᵗʰ, al-Azhar celebrated the second anniversary of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi, a declaration signed by the Great Imam of al-Azhar, Aḥmad al-Ṭayyib and Pope Francis, by organizing a two-day online conference headed by Dr. Muḥammad al-Ḍuwaynī, Vice-Great Imam of al-Azhar (photo). Unfortunately, as is too often the case, this important event largely went unnoticed outside Arabic-speaking milieus. The good is too often silent and the truth is frequently overshadowed by rumors!

The status of women must be understood in the light of general Qurʾānic values (justice, equity, compassion…) and not in the light of a few verses interpreted too quickly and used as intangible legal principles. The hope for renovation that this ethical reading brings is at the service of the liberation of all —especially the weakest— and not just of women, who have been made completely invisible in the Muslim tradition.
